Allergy Screening

Every patient with allergy or 'intolerance' should be able to get an adequate and appropriate allergy assessment through the NHS, with the right advice about avoidance of their triggers and management of their symptoms. Unfortunately NHS primary care allergy services are patchy and many people do not get the help they need.

Allergy UK continues to campaign for better provision of NHS allergy services but has also developed partnerships with others to provide paid-for allergy screening services for allergy sufferers who need them. Our Pharmacy Service has been developed to meet this need. Our accredited pharmacist has gone through extensive training in order to deliver this service

A consultation with our trained pharmacist is followed by an on-the-spot basic allergy blood test if this is required (not all people need an allergy test; the decision is made after taking a medical and allergy history). Advice about symptom management is given. If your problem is more complex or severe, or is not related to allergy, you will be given advice about what action to take (referral to GP or specialist allergy clinic).

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the screening cover?

A full clinical history will be taken which includes the pharmacist discussing various aspects of your lifestyle.  The pharmacist may recommend that you also have a test or, if you would like a test, you can request one.  Please note, the tests available in pharmacy cover the most common allergens only.

What is the cost?

Consultation                           £35
Test (if required/requested)      £25
A maximum of                                £60

The Pharmacy donates £10 0f this to Allergy UK

Can I have a test without the consultation?

Without knowing the clinical history, the test results are impossible to interpret.  If you would like a test you will need to have the consultation too and pay the maximum fee of £60.

After taking the history and (if needed) a test, the pharmacist will be able to make a diagnosis of which allergens are likely to be triggering your reaction. You will be given advice on how to better manage your condition, including advice on over the counter medication, allergen avoidance or, in more complex cases, a referral to your GP.  As it is unclear before the consultation is undertaken whether a test is required, the fee will be payable once the screening is complete.

What happens after the Allergy Screening with the pharmacist?

Allergy UK will follow up your allergy screening by providing you with a tailored information pack and will contact you shortly afterwards to see how you are getting on following the advice.

How will I know that the Pharmacist is accredited by Allergy UK?

All pharmacists accredited by Allergy UK will have been through an intensive training programme and will have two valid certificates on display in their pharmacy to prove that they have completed the accreditation process.  There will be one certificate for the pharmacist and one for the pharmacy.
